Surging and Pedal "feel"

I have a couple of issues with my 94 900S that may, or may not be related.
In addition to the "regular" rough idle at stoplights, periodically (once every couple of weeks) while driving my car will start surging. It bucks and has no power, and actually feels like it is out of gas. If I turn the car off and let it sit for a couple of minutes it goes away. It happens more under hard acceleration, but otherwise there is no consistency between episodes (temp, fuel level in tank, speed, time of day, moon phase--anything). I took it to my mechanic and he replaced the plugs and cleaned the throttle plate, but I still experience the problems once in a while. Anyone have experience with similar problems?
Also, a friend commented to me after driving my car that the gas pedal felt funny. I hadn't ever thought about it much, but it does seem that the pedal is "stiffer" than other cars. The only other car that I drive much is my girlfriend's Honda Accord, and it has much better throttle response. I attribute part of that to the Honda being lighter, but it does seem "peppier". I know it sounds silly, but can anyone describe how their pedals feel?
