I also thought the same thing. How can a car be serviced with no one noticing this potential problem. My wifes car had less then 3000 miles on it when the DI cassette died and this just happened after the 1000 mile tune up that was done at 2000 miles. I asked the dealer how it could happen and they really did not have a plausible answer. They said that the cassette need changing at different times for different cars and it is hard to tell when? The dealer also stated that they need to be changed around 30-60k. I also have a 97 900se and have never changed my cassette and it has 70k. I really do not think the dealer checks for the problem on a routine bases and they tend just to see this problem when the system fails.
