DIY Power Antenna Fix (long) Posted by Duhey2 [Email] (#151) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Duhey2) on Sat, 28 Oct 2000 17:11:54 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Well I finally was able to take care of my power antenna. As I have mentioned in the past, my car was one of the millions of SAABs whose antenna doesn't go down all the way even thought the mast is straight. The antenna was a pretty easy (and cheap) job. I had purchased the $1.60 drum from the dealer and went to town. Basically I had to:
Remove the antenna from the shaft and the plastic "peak" on the outside of the car
Remove the CD changer from inside the trunk
Remove screws from the left, rear speaker mount and the plastic "bolt" looking screw near the brake light access door
Pull the fabric back
Dismount the power antenna unit from the body of the car
Disconnect the clear, plastic drain tube from deep in the wheel well (it's tough to disconnect it from the antenna unit.
Disconnect the radio connection and power supply.
Remove brass-colored mounting bracket from the bottom of the antenna unit (the clear tube goes right through it)
Remove the 6mm nut and open the drum housing (beware, there's a thin rubber seal that you'll need to seal it back up)
Swap out the two drums
Carfully replace the seal and reassemble the drum housing.
Reverse the order.....
I had assumed this drum would've been mangled or something but it seemed like brand new (very greasy though). Anyway, to look at the two side by side they're slightly different. SAAB must've realized this new design was better.
I think all told, it took me roughly an hour. It'd take probably 30% less time if I had to do it again since I've already done it once.
Hasta,
