To get the drive shaft out you have to disconnect the tie rod end and the ball joint on the bottom of the strut so you can swing the strut out and slide the spline out of the hub.
The tapered shaft is on the tie rod end where it connects to the strut housing. It is usually wedged in pretty tight and requires a tie rod end separator to disassemble. Tie rod ends used to have a castle nut and cotter pin. The Saab has a self locking nut that is impossible to get off if the tapered part turns.
