'95 900S Timing Chain noise

My '95 900S (purchased new 7/96) has 47,000 miles. It has been making a lot of loud chain-scuffing noises for several months now. I had assumed it was simply a bad nylon chain guide or some such piece. Took it to Saab Exchange in Highland Park, IL.
The mechanic gave me the bad news - lots of timing chain wear - and slop (hence the noise). I can drive the car, with the eventual risk of breaking the chain and totalling the engine. I decided to bite the bullet and have the chains replaced. $1200 for parts and $1800 for labor.
Now, I know a LITTLE about engines, and used to work on my (much simpler) 1968 2002's engine, even pulled the head and ground the valves - pretty good for me. Our 900S's engine must be pulled, but the mechanic said he's got to pull the heads. Pull the heads? Why? Are the chains mounted INTERNALLY?
Any information on this procedure would be appreciated. I can get the mechanic's explanation, but a third-party view is always healthy. Thanks.
