Lots of people have the engine without problems, it's supposed to be quite strong and smooth. (I have the 2.0 Turbo.) The issue is the timing belt -- it's a weakness in the engine, it NEEDS to be done every 30,000 miles. In fact, Saab will pick up the bill for this job the first three times. Problem is, if the belt goes, you have a very high chance of a repair bill in the thousands. (It has to do with the suddenly out-of-time pistons crashing into things...very messy...)
But the 2.3 and 2.0 Turbo engines have a reputation for being almost bulletproof, which is probably why some people are adamant about staying away from the 6. So, those is the facts. There's been alot of discussion about it on this board, just do a couple searches....
In any case, you should have the dealer pull the records and see if the belt was done at 60,000, and have it done at 90,000.
