Certainly, extended warranties are there to make money for the issuer, not to help the buyer.
But, with that said, these cars are complex, and expensive to fix, and, in my experience, somewhat unreliable. My extended warranty cost me about $1200 and has paid for about $900 in parts and labor, with 14k miles and 1 year left on it. If the LF clunk last week had turned out to be a broken strut mount, the warranty would have covered itself.
Think about it, an IAC valve is about $350, one headlight wiper motor is about $350, a DI cassette is about $350. Parts and labor to replace my cars' leaking input shaft seal were about $400. This stuff adds up in a hurry. On the down side, the extended warranty I got doesn't cover heated seats, so in spite of one fix under warranty, I've never felt heat on the drivers side in the two years I've had this car. My passengers are toasty, though.
