I was recently in the market for a used new-gen 900, and I can say that your 1996 model has a lot going against it (for someone willing to do the research). For starters the 94's and '95's have bad reputations as Saab tried to work the bugs out of the new gen models. The DI cassette failure, front strut bonking, cable-actuated clutch and limp-feeling shifter (in manual tranny cars) come immediately to mind.
Move up to '97 and you get nicer wheels, bigger brakes, "Turbo 2.0" emblems on the back (adds +20 hp!!!), Talledega edition available, some other things too...
Move up to '98 and you get the '97 model changes plus modified shifter, hydraulic clutch, different steering wheel, painted bumper trim, etc...
I think they modified the upper strut assembly at some time, but I don't know when. Mine doesn't clunk *yet*. I didn't look at '99 9-3's because those jumped up into the low-to-mid $20k and that was too much for my purposes.
Myself, I picked up an off-lease 1998 SET for $15,800 from a dealer auction in the SF Bay area. It is mint condition with 55k miles, and I've only had to spend money on it for upgrades :) :)
