I know that the NG's do better in crashes, but that figures. Safety has come a long way since 1979!
The rigidity most are talking about here is resistance to lateral twisting. This is what affects handling and is less important to safety. It's something you can really feel if you drive the both cars hard in the turns. Some of the handling difference is certainly caused by the poorly-engineered steering system in the NG900, but not all.
If you don't believe me, go borrow an SPG.
