There are basically two ways to flush the power steering system.
Method 1 is to disconnect the return hose from the power steering reservoir. Place the P/CS return hose ina suitable container, like a milk jug. have someone else start the engine while you pour new power steering fluid into the reservoir while catching the old power steering fluid in the suitable container. The person helping you can move the steering rack from side to side to help remove all the fluid. They may need to quickly turn of the engine if you run out of P/S fluid or need to change comtainers. Thsi takes about 2 quarts of new fluid to flush the P/S system.
Method 2 is to suck the P/S fluid out of the reservoir using a fluid pump or a turkey baster. Dispose of the old fluid in a suitable container. Refill the reservoir with fresh P/S fluid. Start the engine and turn the steering rack from side to side (or drive the vehicle for a few miles). Stop the engine and again suck the P/S fluid out of the reservoir. Repeat, until you have used approximately 2 to 3 quarts of new fluid.
I used method 2 to switch to Valvoline SynTech synthetic power steering fluid in my 1998 900SET. Since I only drive about 12 miles round trip to work, I simply emptied and re-filled the P/S reservoir when I got home every night for a week or so.
