French lights were all yellow until about 5-6 years ago when the EU forced them to change to white.
I believe they had been yellow since WWII. Yellow made it easier to distinguish French cars from others (German). After the war the yellow lights stayed. They liked them over there as they produced significantly less glare, and made driving at night easier on the eyes. The downfall was that they were not as bright as white lights, and when you were outside the cities they didn't light up the roads as well.
I seem to remember that British cars used to have a triangular notch of black on them. Was this to reduce glare? I don't think they have that anymore, but I could be wrong.
