Just for the chains, it sounds high. It is a 12 hour job (by the book), and probably $300 or $400 in little parts to do all the chains and sprockets, so it's not cheap, either. BUT...there may be more to depending on what else downstream has suffered (oil pump, etc.). Find out exactly what he wants to do.
Driving it? The bad news...don't. When you see the light, you're basically out of pressure. Even if the pressure has been restored, it's only going to plug up again, maybe a matter of days or weeks, because the chains are disintegrating.
So, if you run it, you risk either A) getting so oil starved that it siezes and potentially throws a rod out of the block or b) the timing chain/sprockets jam/break and the head gets destroyed. A is a definite if B doesn't happen first. Sorry to be blunt, it is alot of money. I wonder if Anders can tell us what 'doing this right' should include...
