Dean, check with your local PepBoys, etc. to see if they have a special tool for the top nut. I have not used one myself -- usually I just jam the nut with something like a large screwdriver and then turn the damper shaft, which is usually shaped to accept a wrench at the top. This is royal pain in the ***, as you know. But there are special tools designed to allow to hold the shaft and tighten the nut at the same time.
