Alternator Issues? (long)

I just had my car in for its 65K service. They also replaced my serp belt. A few days later, I had to get a new battery. Now, I'm driving home and the battery light comes on and the car starts chiming away. Well, to me it sounds like my alternator/generator is dying/dead. Well, it's raining/snowing badly here so there are some huge puddles. I decided to try to make it back to work since I was only a few miles away. First I pulled over into a gas station and made sure there was someone who lived near here to pick me up if I don't make it. I turned the car off, checked to see if the battery was wet (it wasn't) and noticed I needed gas. Well I filled up with gas (hoping the battery light would go off if it were just wet) and started back to work. On the way back, the light was on, the car was chiming and I was just praying to make it back. Well, all of a sudden, no light, no chimes, but the car is still running. Well in all my excitement I took a wrong turn and it took me a lot longer to get back to work then I expected. Well I'm at work, it's late, and I want to go home which is about an hour from here. I figure that I'll go down and turn it on and if there are no signs of trouble, try to make it home.
Now my question... Supposing I make it home, is there a way to check the alternation/generator?
Thanks,
Andy 97 900SE
