My '97 900set (54k miles) started doing the same thing late last fall. My vibration is intermittent also (which makes diagnosis a bit tougher), and it is a NASTY one, when it occurs.
I have determined that the vibration occurs only when the A/C compressor is kicked in. If I run the ACC in ECON mode (which I try to do as often as possible - better gas mileage) the A/C compressor clutch is disengaged. I ran in ECON mode all winter and the vibration never occurred. Just recently, we had a warm spell, which caused me to have to run in AUTO mode and lo and behold, the nasty vibration came back (intermittently of course).
I have yet to pull the serp belt to check out the idler pulleys, but I have heard the same claim as MJP, and therefore suspect one of them is almost dead. I'm guessing that the additional load from the A/C works them a bit harder and causes the weak link to "cry". If it is one of the pulleys, I'll change it quickly as I've heard that once the begin to cry, they will strand you shortly thereafter.
Let me know if this sounds familiar and I'll let you know what I find after pulling the serp belt.
