possible blown engine/balance chains

I was driving down the Interstate yesterday doing about 70MPH when suddenly I heard a rattling noise and a huge puff of smoke. The engine hesitated a few seconds and died. The engine continued to bellow white smoke on the same side as the air filter. I had the car towed and am now awaiting the dreaded news from the mechanic. The mechanic believes that it is something to do with the balance chains since the car will start but make a horrendous noise. The engine is NOT seized up. The car has 71000 miles with regular oil change intervals (every 4000-6000 miles).
Any ideas on what could have happened? Is this a normal for a Saab? Do I have any recourse with Saab about this. The mechanic said that if it is the balance chains, the repair bill will be in the $2500 range. If there is damge to the heads and/or valves then a used motor would be reccomended to replace the dead motor. Estimate of about $4000.
On another note, I am in need to replace my exhaust and went to Saabcatolog.com and the sports exhaust is no longer available for the 900. Will the exhaust for the 9-3 fit on the 900? I know that the 9-3 exhaust does not include the exhaust tip. Any ideas where I can purchase the sports exhaust for my 900?
Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks...
Nico
