Just wanted to give you my opinion on Pete and his shop. I had my car in there for a shifter bushing rebuilt and a leaky A/C hose. The quotes they called me with seemed kind of high and, since I had the same problems fixed by the dealer previously, I checked my prior invoices. His quote turned out to be twice as expensive as International Motors charged me for the same work. It came down to him charging twice the labor hours. When my wife questioned the quotes Pete himself became very rude and defensive. He mentioned how his work was top notch and if we didn't like it don't get it done. We had him fix the shifter to get it out of there and it failed on me one week later when I was 100 miles from home. So much for quality work!
I thought there were guidelines as to hours to charge for jobs but I am not sure. However, you expect to pay a reasonable market rate and trust people to quote as such. Once I don't trust a shop it's over for me.
BTW...I took Dick's advice and went to AutoScandia. They were fine and charged me a reasonable fee for replacing my clutch cable and washer pump. As the clucth cable had been fixed by the dealer once before so I checked the charge. It was about the same as I had paid before ($175).
