I picked up this very interesting piece from IATN ( where I'm a member and helper when needed ).
This is very much in line with what I suspect being wrong with the early NG900 manual trannys, when it seems impossible to engage the reverse, or that it's popping out.
This is when all the easy stuff have been tried, like motor/trans mounts, align shifter and updated shifter linkage. If all those things fails, the transmission needs to be rebuilt and updated.

Hello all. This fix-post took a long time because of
scheduling problems, finding a two-day stretch that was
agreeable to our shop and the customer. We then pulled the
gearbox out & apart and fixed the problem, with invaluable
assistance from iAtn subscribers Anders Johanson, Joseph
Sheridan, JUNK900, and especially Carl Jardevall and Gerald
Sweet, both of whom had The Answer. The lever arm that
throws reverse gear into engagement has been redesigned,
for longer throw and deeper engagement. The new part # is
87 45 630. What SAAB has done, belatedly, is to move the
fulcrum of this see-saw lever off center, so that X amount
of throw on one end equals X+y amount of throw on the other
end, so that reverse gear gets a crucial 1/8' deeper
engagement. Why didn't they do that in the first place??
Anyway: brothers and sisters, anyone who opens up one of
these manual 5-speeds for any reason, should update this
reverse lever if it's the early, symmetrical kind, with the
pivot point in the center, whether there's a reverse
complaint or not. And remember, if you didn't already know,
that the car that makes a fool of you always belongs to a
friend or relative. I called my old pal Knut this morning
and he said that reverse was now 100%. Thank you all for
your fine, knowledgable and good-hearted assistance.
