Mine did the same thing. It was simply a top potentiometer, there is a bunch of them that tells the computer where the top is in the going up or down process. With this part replaced and a complete reprograming of the top up/down sequence it works great. Was it cheap? Well it cost $600 which is a lot less than the motor. If the motors moves the top till it stops I would say it is not the top.The part was a whopping $325 and labor was the rest which was 2.5 hours at the SAAB factory rate. My local indie recomended that the dealer do it, he was very honest about his limitations (Jerry at Sweet Motors in North Jersey). That's why he gets all of my other business.
One thing you need to make sure of is that your mechanic must be trained in the process of diagnosing and calibrating the top. If they are not they will say "the motor needs to be replaced" every time.
Good luck,
JohnSE
