If you plan to do the work yourself I would just keep it in the trunk until you have a problem. However if you do this you know that if it snaps, it will do it at the worst possible time.
I have had 2 NG900 cars and both of them have had the cable snap. I am on # 3 now, at almost 100K on my 1997 and the last one lasted just 30K (had it replaced when the clutch was done) so as you can see they can last a long time or they will not.
On my 1994 900 I changed the first cable @ 130K so you never know.
