Well, after a fantastic 4-day weekend of great people, great cars and great fun, we're back home. Steve Bunton, Saab Car Club of Australia representative, made the longest journey of over 11,000 miles to join the festivities! Steve then joined me and my wife for the trip back home and then his girlfriend flew in Tuesday and we're all doing the tourist thing this week with us.
But that'll be another story...
With over 250 cars all models and even some obscure one-off's represented, it was a fantastic show. I got to ride in Rich Levy's super modified 9000CS. Now normally you'd thing "a CS? That's pretty tame, right?" With 315hp, and 407 lb-ft of torque, this monster was anything but tame, despite what one may think of the rather "quiet" looking exterior--this car has Aeros and Viggens for breakfast! And his car, though close, was not the Dyno competition winner. A red 9000 race car won that honor in the HP department, while a 99 with a transplanted Chrysler 340 hemi V8 won the torque honors. Don't have the specific numbers with me, but will get them and post as soon as I do.
Later I'll be uploading pictures that I and Steve took, and a formal review will be posted in the next newsletter (more on that topic later).
EVENTS
We've got a couple coming up and a few more brewing.
1. British Car Days: I know, I know! You're saying "British???". Well consider the fact that our engine's heritage can be traced to the Triumph Stag, our British brothers. The Central Virginia British Car Club has invited us to join their event on the weekend of September 17-18.
If interested, you'll need to register before September 1. Go to http://cvbcc.com/bcd2005/bcd2005info.htm to register.
2. WASSAAB's annual Virginia Piedmont Fun Run (we need a better name, by the way...) will be on Sunday October 2. Any and all Saabs invited. As will previous years there are no registration fees, but you will have to sign a waiver of course. I've met with S&S Saab, and they've been gracious to offer their lot as a start/finish point. Possible BBQ at the finish. More details to come.
3. Tech Sessions: We've had two suggestions, and I know that Jeff Williams, one of the techs at S&S has offered to step up to do a transmission tear-down. Frank Humm has a 5-speed and is looking to be the guinnea pig!
Pete Duvall's rare 5-door project car is an 8v automatic he's looking to convert to a 16v manual. Truly a long-haul project, but we could break it down into small mini-projects -- pedal kits, electrical, shift linkage, and of course the engine/transmission swap itself. Major stuff, but if we look at it from a step-by-step project it may be do-able.
No dates yet set for those, but perhaps we could tackle in the winter months.
4. Dyno Day: For whatever reason, we keep talking about it, but never nail down a date. I'll be making some phonecalls, and see what discounts, if any, may be applied for a group. On that score, I'll need to get a count of who would be interested.
That's it for now. As always, if any have any suggestions or questions, please feel free to post and/or email.
And always, keep safe and keep Saabing!
Jim Miller.
