I doubt I will make it to the get together and drive at S & S on Sunday due to the parents being in town and they will probably be uninterested in riding around in my car all day. Besides, I've told some of you what my Dad thinks of the money I've put into my car anyway, so that is a contentious subject that is best avoided while they are here. I guess I will take them to the last Nationals game of the season instead. Some lucky ticketholder will win one of those Chevy HHR's, which is one ugly, no, FUGLY car/truck/van/thing. I have lived in DC one year now, and I have yet to go to the aquarium in B'more, so that is a destination too.
Otherwise, I will be going to Saabtoberfest in Wilkes-Barre, PA with my friend Erica on the 8th. Does anybody know of a decent campground in the W-B area? I called the guys at the shop that is hosting the event, and they did not have any local suggestions. They also told me that they expect to best last year and have 70 Saabs on their fun run and they are going to tackle some really challenging mountain roads, including Giant's Leap--which hosts a somewhat famous hillclimb in August each year. Lots of participants wait until the last second since they want to only hit the roads in good weather, as I have been told. Check out Saabtoberfest.com. I think there will be a swap meet too, and I hope to find a set of SPG wheel arches to finish out my SPG kit. I hope to get to test drive a C900 with a SaabSavior billet aluminum short throw shifter, which is my next upgrade.
Wheels!!! I got my car back from S & S yesterday, with my newly acquired super-aero wheels on. I bought them on Ebay from a guy in Charleston, WV who was parting out a wrecked 9000 Aero. Professionally refinshed, all they needed was a light polishing on the rims to make them really gleam. They came wrapped in a good set of Bridgestone Potenza RE750 tires. Don't worry, my car is not headed outside this winter if there is any hint of snow, especially with those tires on! But man, are those tires awesome. Yes my car sits maybe 3/4" higher since they are 205-50-16 tires, but they are wider, tackier and quieter than my old all-season Pirelli's. I held the car to about 60 mph on the on-ramp loop from Prince William Pkwy. onto I-95, without any squealing! That would have been my only gripe about the Commerative Edition 900's: The wheels, if it were up to me, I would have put SPG or something completely new and limited, rather than the 'directional teardrop' wheels that they did come with. I guess I may have given it a black or grey top, because tan tops are impossible to keep clean and they make the car look less aggressive.
Btw--about Erica, she has crossed over and seen the light! She has been a fan of VW as long as she can remember, but now she is set on buying a Saab 'vert, preferably a Viggen! Erica is going to sell her New Beetle and definitely trade up. She has been shopping around and may be a Saab owner by the end of October. If anybody knows of a Viggen or 99-2002 9-3 'vert for sale, let me know. Swedish Motorcars had a black Viggen hardtop for sale, but I'm not sure if that has been sold... What does she like best? The whine of the turbo? Center console mounted ignition? It seems Erica seems to like the notion of heated/ventilated seats best.
Lastly, thanks to Frank Hum for graciously offering to store all of my Saab stuff (extra wheels, SPG body kit until I get it repainted and installed) in his garage. I love my new apartment near Court House Metro, and having indoor parking, but I have a severe lack of space for things like tires now.
OK, one more thing since I just thought of it...I have a great idea for next year...Lets do an all-Saab tailgate party at a Nats game next season. Just an idea. The Nationals have special packages for group outings.
enjoy the roads on Sunday,
Daniel Purvis
