Hi everyone,
I haven't posted here in what seems like forever, but I just finished a project that I had been wanting to try for a long time and thought I'd share. I should post this on the performance board as well...maybe after a trip to the dragstrip and/or dyno :)
Anyway, many of you are familiar with my 1986 900S notchback, which I modded by installing a 2.1 normally-aspirated motor with turbocharger. With a '91 S gearbox, Mitsu turbo, AC delete and manual steering, that car is still a blast to drive, but with 2 small kids in car seats it rarely gets driven.
For two years my daily driver has been my '92 9000 turbo, but recent TCS issues that left me stranded (kids not in the car both times, thankfully) forced me to switch to my only other 4-door...my '92 900 sedan base car. Normally-aspirated (2.1) and automatic...pretty slow compared to any of my other cars.
Well, this past week I took care of that problem, installing a stock Mitsu TE-05 on the stock engine/trans. I have long thought that adding the small, quick-spooling Mitsu to a high compression engine would all but eliminate the considerable off-the-line lag that automatic-equipped C900 turbos are known for. I am happy to report that I was correct...the car gets up and goes. The stock LH 2.4.2, including the original 3.0 FPR, injectors, and EZK, work perfectly with the 6-7 psi of boost it is running. Water injection would be the next logical step to squeeze some more power out of it, but it runs so well I don't think I'll mess with it for a while. I am very happy with the results, and would encourage anyone who is thinking of turbocharging a normally aspirated car (auto or manual) to do so.
I would estimate that the car is putting out around 165-175 peak horsepower, which is in line with a stock C900 turbo auto. Time for a dyno run to get some real numbers.
The 6-pack of turbocharged Saabs in my stable is complete. All is good.
Hope to see you all sometime soon...
