On the weekly Saturday night prog rock program Gagliarchives, they replayed a lengthy interview with Peter Banks that originally aired in 1997. Coincidentially to your post above, he was discussing the guitar playing of former Nice member Davey O'List, and in doing so, remarked how O'List's solos were very loose, and nothing like his own (presumably non-loose) playing. In any event, they played alot of old Yes and Flash material, as well as Banks' more recent solo stuff, and it really jumped out what an interesting player he was. Howe is obviously a tremendous technician (so is Al DiMeola, who can out-technician everyone), but I cannot think of any solos Howe performed that really left an impression on me. Banks had some good ones. And the fact that he put out a solo record co-starring Jan Akkerman (who even Banks admitted was a better player than he), means he had no ego issues either. Too bad not too many people appreciated his playing more.
