Given to me as an Xmas gift, polished it off last night. Set in 1988, protagonist lawyer Jake Brigance, living almost in poverty, drives an aging red Saab 900 with 190,000 miles that apparently requires repairs occasionally but at great cost at an out of town dealer. He doesn't have the money to buy anything better (or shall we say 'else').
The book is so disappointing - no character development of the Saab. We are not told how or why he came to own it, whether he likes or dislikes it, why he keeps it despite its challenges, finds it functional or sporty or both or neither, turbo or non turbo, 5 speed or auto, it's particular idiosyncrasies, what his wife thinks of it, what his redneck town mates think of it, or him because he drives an oddball swedish- built car in Clanton Mississippi, or anything else of importance. The car plays no special role in the story but thankfully his Saab does NOT break down during the course of the story.
Many of us know this story.
The book's main story is about a contested will, but that is a different story, one I won't opine on here, u will have to read it yourself!
