I have not had them that big (1/4") but have had them. I could never figure out what it was either. Been on both the 87 900T and 99 9-3SE, both driven to different destinations on a daily basis so it must be something in the air (sap in the wind?) tar, etc from a truck on hiway or local to my driveway as neighbors don't get them.
As a last resort (Bret, don't kill me for this!) I used a credit card and soapy water and scraped them off both cars, swirl remover, polished, waxed, gone!
