Hi Gregg
The big noisy shop vacs have always worked well - they are powerful, and cheap. Watch for sales - the "good" ones at Sears will drop to $70 bucks and come with enough attachments to baffle an astronaut. I always have at least two in my shop as the newest ones do the cars and the older ones get demoted to cleaning the basement, pool filters, lint etc. As they age, the funky fungus smell is nearly impossible to totally expunge from the unit. If you use it around your car's interior - it will spread the spores around and encourage the odors to propogate in your car... hence the rotating vacuum system.
We have a tradition in my house that when my father-in-law visits in the summer, he leaves with the "oldest" shop-vac that he will lovingly "restore"... I guess he has the luxury of retirement to lavish such attention on a vacuum. Oh well, he brings the 427 Cobra and let's me drive it, so he can have as many shop-vacs as he wants!!
Cheers,
Eric
