Crud from the atmosphere settles onto your clearcoat and adheres, so evern the best washing won't get rid of it. Clay can work wonders; it can also ruin your paintjob beyond repair. So go slow and use lots of lube. And keep turning the clay in case you pick up something that will scratch. FWIW, I use the clay from Griot's and his Speed Shine.
For water spots, clay may or may not do the trick. You can also try vinegar solutions because often it's just minerals stuck to the clearcoat.
Wash the car with Dawn before you start to strip off the wax. Never use dishwashing liquid on your car for any other purpose.
