20 years of experimenting has come down to one word: Microfiber.
Microfiber towels have revolutionized car detailing and window cleaning is the biggest beneficiary. Use the best MF towels you can find (I can provide supplier info if you want) and a top quality auto glass cleaner like Eagle One 20/20 or Stoners Invisible Glass. The towel/cleaner combo is incredible. You can even use the towels dampened with water if you like.
For exterior glass here's another couple words: steel wool.
Use #0000 super fine steel wool and your glass cleaner. The wool fibers will remove surface crud and lightly polish the glass without scratching. Wipe down with another MF towel and you're set.
Last tip: Keep glass cleaning MF towels separate from all others. Otherwise they get contaminated with the residue from the other towels. I keep mine in a ziploc bag.
