The only time I had heard of this being done before this BB was on classic cars -- never thought to do it on a modern one. So if this is what most people do with classic cars with original paint jobs to make the car show perfect I would guess its ok for you with a 1990. I think that it would just mean that you need to make sure you always have a good solid coat of wax on the car to protect the paint (which I am sure you already do).
