The progeny went off to his senior prom last night, and he did so in
my freshly detailed '97 Aero. We worked on it from 11-5. We washed and
dried the car. Opened up the openings and wiped down all the non-
exposed paint and plastic. While I was working the Mothers Clay Bar kit on the outside, he did up the inside with mothers leather cleaner. We then
went on to a complete wax-on/wax-off. and then a complete going over
with the Meguires trim restorer and doing all the glass too... whew..
my arms are worn out... :^)
If you ever wax your car again without giving the clay bar treatment
first, you are wasting time. Of course if your car never sees the sun,
is new or you've always been over anal and parked inside or under a
tarp, you might not need to claybar. I found that the surface prep the
clay bar gives the wax is killer. Once the clay bar was finished, the
surface is so smooth, the wax goes on and comes off MUCH easier than
I've ever experienced. And it looks much better too.
I do not think that I will get another use out of the Mothers Clay Bar
I used. It is a small piece at 4"x 2-1/2" x 1/2" and keeping it grit and dust free during the process is challenging, even inside a garage. As you work the bar, it is almost impossible to not pick up black smears from the ever present black plastic and rubber seals all over the car. One might want to do an reall anal job on the prep prior to the clay, icluding some sort of wipedown on all the exposed rubber/plastic. ( although I've noticed the more you rub the more black you get... If you clay bar, try to do it on a calm day and out of the sun. Also double check each area for dust/grit and dust off-dry wipe down each section just before starting.
The mothers Kit includes a std spray bottle of detailer. I was very
liberal with it, which you are supposed to do, and I was down to
spaying mist by the time I finished... my advice would be to get an
extra bottle of spray. I had to lighten up spray use on the last 3rd
of the car to make sure I didn't run out.
It makes sense that the claying process makes for a better waxing,
similar to the most important part of a paint job being the prep work
done before the paint goes on.
In conversation with others on the Turbo list, the mothers product is "consumer grade" clay and is reported to break down quickly. I did see this happening by the time I finished. The next time I clay bar anything, I will go get the 3M or other shop grade blend in a bucket and skip buying the puny bar.
cheers...
(just wish it was me driving around in it tight now... )
