Someone scratched the rear quarter panel (vertical surface) of my black '03 9-5 Arc in a parking lot the other day. Scratch is kinda circular/spiral, about the size of a nickel, and fairly deep (fingernail catches on it). I'm done pissing and moaning about it, and now want to fix it. I'm planning a self-repair, and would appreciate your input on my plan. Here's my 10-step plan for your input:

1. Clean about a 6" area around the scratch with isopropyl alcohol to remove wax, etc.

2. Smooth and feather edges of scratch using dry 1500 grit sandpaper under medium (5 lbs?) of thumb pressure.

3. Clean again with isopropyl alcohol and microfiber towel.

4. Apply (well-shaken) Saab touchup paint, using a toothpick to control rate of paint application. Basically, dab a little bit of paint onto the toothpick, then allow it to wick off into the scratch. Work around the entire scratch to fill it so it'0s higher than the surrounding paint/clearcoat surface.

5. Allow paint to dry for 2 hours out of the sun.

6. Sand down the painted scratch lightly with dry 1500 grit paper and a sanding block. If possible, given the fender contours, will work from front to rear area. Sanding in 1 direction only, as few passes as possible (5?) to bring the paint to the same level as the surrounding paint/clearcoat.

7. Use 3M rubbing compound on area around scratch.

8. Reaply Klasse AIO to entire fender.

9. Wax fender with Maguires NXT (just waxed the rest of the car yesterday).

10. Bask in the glory of a succesful self-repair.

I've never undertaken this kind of repair before, so does this sound OK? I expect this'll take about 4 hours start to finish, but that assumes a 2-hhour paint cure time before sanding is enough. Let me know what you think...
