High Pressure Spray Systems -- worth the hassle?

I started to look for a decent spray system for myself. So far, automotive painting in the only foreseeable use. HVLP came up very quickly as the tool of choice. However, I found a few remarks, that the old-school high-pressure spray guns still beat HVLP systems hands down -- qualitywise -- for automotive finishes.
I started looking at SATA PR guns ... the problem appears to be to find a compressor for them. They require 10 cfm at 29 psi. The only compressors capable of delivering this kind of flow are *huge* behemoths weighing close to 300 lbs and requiring 230 V electric mains. I am wondering if it would be still worth it -- for the sake of quality of the finish produced -- to pursue a system like this?
How about oil and moisture contamination problems? I've read that regular compressors are quite susceptible to this. I am wondering if those plague only the low-end/poor-quality models, and that maybe that the behemoths I am talking about are immune?
Also, could anybody comment on what nozzle size is best for the automotive paints (regular single-color + clearcoat)?
Thank you,
-- Nick
