Depends what you want to do - paint whole cars or just touchup? Hack job, or restoration quality? For touchups, painting inside engine compartments, small parts, etc a little touchup gun and a (real) 2hp compressor will do fine. I use a 2hp, 11gal tank, 2cyl Sanborn.
NOTE: DO NOT BUY A DIRECT DRIVE OILLESS COMPRESSOR OF ANY TYPE. THE NOISE WILL DRIVE YOU CRAZY.
If you want to use a big gun and paint whole cars to a reasonable level of quality, well then you're looking at the 300lb 230V compressor, air/water filtering, appropriate safety equipment (full enclosed nuclear suit with forced filtered air supply), proper ventilated spray booth, zoning approvals, government licensing, environmentally hazardous waste disposal, etc.
If you don't care about the quality or your health but just want to shoot cars in your garage, then you only need a gun and a big compressor.
Bottom line is the gun is only one part of a long list of items needed to qo a quality job. I haven't even mentioned skill & practice which is the most important.
