Perhaps you should consider having a professional detailer get your car in tip-top shape, then you maintain it going forward. I think it would be easier for you to let someone else do the heavy lifting (or buffing, as it were).
Don't get me wrong. I'm not suggesting that you can't or shouldn't tackle this job - by all means, go for it! But if it seems like a big task and you'd have to invest $$ on new products and tools, you might get the best results and get more enjoyment if someone else does the dirty work for you.
If you want to learn more about car detailing, click on the link below and read some of the articles. I'm sure you'll find them interesting. Also download the "Guide To Detailing" linked on the same page. That will give you a terrific primer as to what it takes to get your car looking top notch.
