From my experience, trying to remove wax residue from trim is more time consuming and maddening than taping off trim. You didn't mention the type of car you own but on a 9-5 for example, all you need to tape off is the black rub strips around the waistline, the windshield washer nozzles, around the sunroof and the lower plastic trim pieces under the doors (assuming its not an Aero) and under the bumpers.
Some folks like to apply a tire dressing or protectant to trim prior to waxing. The idea is any wax residue would simply wipe off since the trim is pre-coated.
Removing wax residue from Saab trim is challenging. The first time I ran a polisher on my 9-5 I got polish embedded into the trim and it took a lot of effort to remove most of it (I never got it all out). So far the best product I've found that removes wax residue is something called GR40. See the link for more info. Even GR40 isn't magic, though.
Final idea is to consider changing waxes. NXT is a nice store-bought product. A product like Klasse All In One does not stain trim and is as durable as NXT, if not more so.

I hope all this helps. I know taping off trim is a PITA but it's still the best way I know of to prevent staining of the trim.
