at what point is leather lost?

i have a 90 c900 with tan leather interior. for the longest time, the leather was in pretty good shape. now it seems to have gotten stiff and carboard-like. the rear seat looks good, but it stiff with no tears, etc. however, the fron seats are a little worse off. they are more pliable, but the pass seat has a start shaped tear and the drivers seat recently split along a crease about 3 in long.
my question, i have not use leatherique yet. should i continue trying to save the current set up through treatment and repair, or just call it a lost cause and try to find some halfway decent looking covers? the cracks/tears are in the center of the bottom so they are a high stress area and are pulled apart each time someone sit in them. i'm not sure i can repair that easily or cheaply.
any thoughts?
