I know a lot of you have been through this and I'd appreciate your thoughts. I've been trying to bring back the paint on my 91 c900T convertible and finally ran it past some pros - seemed to me that it was just too far gone. (1) the biggest and best said he hoped to never do another restoration job - all the money is in collision repair. Expect to pay $3K for "OEM quality", but he didn't look at my car. (2) Saw some very nice after market / custom paint. Took a quick peek and said not more than $3K. (3) Saw very nice custom and restoration work. This guy kept saying how good of condition the body was in: no rust, no dings, never in an accident. Pointed out a couple chipped / deeply scratched places that needed some "prep" work. Its the SE with the SPG exterior treatment and he noted it has little trim expect body panels. Says $2000 if there is no rust under the body panels, up to $2500 if there is, and he will apply any replacement stuff that I provide. That's 3 coats of orig metalic grey paint and 3 coats clear coat. Door sills, hood and trunk sills, etc would be more.
AM I missing something???? This is central NJ but I've heard all sorts of numbers here, all of them much more. This isn't MACO, they have some really nice looking custom work there.
He told me that the price is so reasonable because the body is so good and there isn't nearly as much prep work as typical. Most cars need alot more body work.
I feel like I am not smart enough about this subject to ask the tough questions.
I will be very happy with an OEM quality paint job. I don't need a show quality job (I mean one that's 10xs better than the original OEM). PS For anyone who knows the area, this is Body by Duie in Bordentown.
