Clay...either Clay Magic (blue box) or Mothers (red box) are available at Pep Boys, Autozone, etc...is a definite addition to your repetoire.
I defer to Bret on swirl remover options.
Also, I do not use a random orbital buffer, so can't comment on the efficiency gained with them.
I have opted for the synthetics over Carnauba-based protectants, and use both Zaino and Klasse. Bothare only available via the web, though. Try and determine which protectant does not leave white-ish residue on the black molding...neither Z nor K leave residues, but oil-based waxes do, for the most part.
If you buy some clay, it comes with a Quick Detailer (QD for short). I use that after each washing as it is a fast supplement to the coatings on the paint, and seems to help maintain the luster and slick feel.
Get a couple of high quality microfiber towels, make sure you wash in warm or cold and air dry them. I am partial to Waynestowels.com (Wayne also sells a line of the chemicals, but I have not purchased his line so can't comment). Make sure to dry the car without rubbing...simply blot up the water (MFs have miraculous blotting potential). This will eliminate further scrathes and micro-marring (look at the sun's reflection off a nicely waxed dark vehicle...notive the circular spidery rings around the sun? That what I'm referring to...my '04 9-5 has none of that since I use this approach to drying.
Forget about tire dressings...most end up on the base panels as the centrigugal force flings it off.
Leatherique is fine, every year or so (every 6 months is a bit of overkill, IMHO).
Back To Black is a nice way to keep black moldings black, though it does seem to disappear after several weeks and needs to be re-applied.
I have recently read that newer dashboards have UV stabilizers in the vinyl to extend their life and reduce the chance of cracks developing. Thus, I don't bother with Vinyl protectants.
This should get you pretty far down the path and generally keep your credit card happy.
