And i'm not too up on it all myself but here's my understanding of it-
Polish- its a substance used about once every 2 or 3 years that will remove the oxidized layer of paint from the car. This leaves a nice clean painted surface behind.
Wax- a substance that will provide some protection to the painted surface. Especially with todays synthetic waxes you should only have to wax the car 3 or 4 times a year.
Personally I would not polish a car, thats a job for an experienced hand. You can damage the paint if done improperly. Hire a detailer. Waxing anyone can do. I used to use carnuba waxes years ago, but recently I prefer the newer synthetic waxes. They shine nice and are easy to use. Probably the best thing you can do for the car is hand wash often. Use quality towels and cloths. And keep the tires and trim pieces nice and black.
