Well.... OK.... the damage is done. What we need to do now is ascertain the extent of the damage and what it will take to fix it.
Can you feel any of the scratches with your fingernail? If so you may need the services of a body shop to fix them properly. If you can't feel them, then they probably can be buffed out.
Rubbing compounds are definitely old skool and are not suited for modern clearcoat/basecoat paint systems. There are many good polishes on the market that can do the job. The trick is to use the mildest products and techniques to start and increase the aggressiveness slowly until you get the results you want.
The electric buffer can be a huge help or a huge liability. If you could tell me exactly what it is (brand and model #), I might be able to make some specific recommendations. How confident are you with using this thing? How often do you use it? Have you used it on your Saab?
If nothing else you can attack the scratches using hand polishes. There are a couple good ones on the market nowadays. Check out your local auto parts store for Meguiars ScratchX or Mothers Scratch Remover. Both are made to be used by hand and are safe for clearcoated paint jobs. Might be worth $7.00 to see if one of these will do the trick.
