I've thrown my buffer wheel at many plastic headlights with a medium cut buffing compound and have had GREAT results.
I use a Handheld Makita Electric grinder with an 8" wool cutting/polishing pad(you can buy the pads at NAPA. I use HighTemp HT-82 medium cut with paint sealant and swirl remover. Haha... Sounds kind of crazy, but it works very well!!
Just make sure that you put the speed on LOW. You don't want to burn into the plastic. And light pressure, and plenty of compound. Use about the weight of the grinder for pressure.
I've done head lights, tail lights, jeep softtop doors, boat windows....
Works really well!! If you live in MA, come by for a beer, and I'll do them up for ya!!
Good luck!!
