I'm Confused about Clearcoated Leather

This is at least the second reference to clearcoated leather on this board and I would like to understand this topic more thoroughly.
Leather is an animal hide that (like human skin) requires a level of moisturize to remain pliant. Since this hide can no longer rely on the functioning body of a cow, sheep, pig etc. to provide this moisture, it must come from an external source - leather conditoners.
The word "clearcoat" suggests that a transparent coat of something has been applied to the leather that prevents the transfer of moisture into or out of the leather (an earlier post said that if water beads up, the leather is clearcoated). If this is the case, then why would the leather need to be conditioned at all?
What am I missing?
Thanks,
Steve
