More debate on leather protection, for anyone who cares Posted by Ken [Email] (#2113) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ken) on Tue, 17 Jun 2003 10:38:41 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
First, a thank you to Bret for offering his advice on all aspects of this detailing board.
The best thing about a bulletin board is good discourse. So I emailed CarCare Online with Bret's observations about using Aerospace 303 or Vinylex on leather, since using a product specified for vinyl on leather directly contradicts their leather care article, and they stand by their published advice to not do that.
According to CarCare Online folks, "The OEM finish on your seats is a water soluble, polymer aniline colorant that is permeable." Thus, they ackowledge that Connelly HydeFood may be inappropriate, but that Lexol leather cleaner and conditioner ARE appropriate. They claim the Lexol conditioner will absorb in through the outer coating, and not just wipe off like the Hyde Food sems to have done.
They also claim that any product which contains UV blocking agents have polymers which tend to clog up the leather, and that is why they say you should absolutely NOT use products intended for vinyl on leather.
For what its worth, the owner's manual suggests using Saab leather cleaner and condsitioner, which would also imply that something can penetrate into the leather.
So there you have it, different experts with dissenting opinions. I think I am going to try Lexol leather conditioner before deciding who I think is right, to see if it truly does get absorbed.
