I happen to agree w Jim, even though every place that puts tires on insist that the best rubber goes on the rear. The rational for this is that given the weight bias on a FWD vehicle, the traction will be less on the rear tires given equivalent tread depth. So put the better tread on the back to compensate for the lesser traction. I always swap front to rear the moment I get home. I feel that if I have steering ability I can compensate for the back end getting loose. Either steer to compensate or accelerate to pull the car straight again. If the front is marginal you will loose steering and accelerator control which I personally feel is much more dangerous.
The idea that the back end needs better traction is derived from the driving ability of the general public. By and large most people have no idea that you shouldn't chop the throttle suddenly if the car starts getting loose. As Richard mentioned, in a FWD car, trailing throttle results in over-steer. If you're already getting in trouble and you back off the gas the car WILL try to come around. And usually so quickly that there is no chnace of recovery for the average driver. I personally love this characteristic; it's a blast onthe twisty roads.
My personal feeling is that anyone getting a drivers license should be required to attend a REAL driving course. Followed by a season or two of ice racing. Then you know how to deal w a car in bad weather.
