I think that the old mich x's(30 yrs ago) would be funky if cross rotated. IMO non-directional modern tires can be cross swapped, especially if the fronts are crossed to opposite side rear, and the rears are moved straight up on the same side. I think this approach might minimize slight front end alignment wear issues, but if the alignment is OK it probably doesn't make much difference.
If you rotate tires on a Saab to even out the wear, moving the more worn fronts to the rear seems unavoidable.
But in the summer, I'm intentionally moving the more worn fronts to the rear, so the rears can find pavement cleared in the rain by the fronts that are less prone to hydroplaning, per my post below.
