Wagons and hatchbacks are not mutually exlusive... why can't we share the love?
I picked a Subaru Outback for my car when I was 19. My roomates and I all owned wagons in college, as we could fit everything we ever needed in them and pursue our nomadic lifestyle at the end of each spring, heading off to the far corners of the continent to commit acts against God and humanity. None of our wagons were particularly cool to us 18-21 year-old males, but they were functional, and admittedly dorky (that has more to do with me than the car though, and I'm resigned to that).
I liked the 9-5 loaner sedan I drove, but not as much as my 9-3: it was comfy, serene, and BIG. It's a nice car. In thirty years I'll probably like the 9-5 more, when the prospective kids have outgrown their test-tubes, and I'm as fat as the damn cops that keep pulling me over.
Something about the hatchback just grabbed me, as it's a perfect asthetic and functional blend of sportiness, style, and utility. At this point in my life, I don't need a car for more than weekend trips and/or picking-up women, and don't think I could handle more than would fit in my 9-3 anyway.
Best,
Lutfisk
