first thing you should do is plead not guilty.
Send requests for the officer's training certificate on the radar gun.
Also request the calibration records for the radar gun used.
I've heard that Cali has the toughest traffic courts but, at least in New York, just by showing up, you can usually work out a plea bargain to have the fine and or points reduced.
Also, check to make sure the info on the ticket is correct, ie. right laws are cited, car and driver info are correct.
Finally, check with local traffic law firms. There's probably a free legal aid place somewhere in your vicinity.
Sounds like you and the officer left on good terms and had a generally positive traffic stop. That can help alot if and when the prosecuter talks with the officer who pulled you over. The bottom line is there alot of loopholes that one can utilize to escape from a ticket. If you have a clean driving record the chances are better, try not to get pulled over again.
One last thing, I read an excellent editorial piece in sport compact car a few weeks ago on this exact process and I believe it was in LA. You might want to check their website, (sportcompactcaronline.com I think) they usually post alot of stuff from the magazine online. Hope that helps. Good Luck!
