I just got myself a 3 series for exactly that reason. I still have the Miata (it's been paid for since 1992, not worth much, why get rid of it), but once the housewives driving Excursions and Suburbans in my neighborhood reached a critical mass, I had to get into something bigger....
I too prefer the M1 interior and exterior to the M2. I think the years you are looking at are prime years -- the 1.8 is probably a bit sturdier and stronger (though the weight is up from the 1.6, so not much faster), and you can find a car with ABS (unavailable my year) and dual front airbags (ditto).
Some of the early 1.6 units have had some engine failure problems -- relating to the timing belt pulley and the crankshaft -- hasn't happened to mine, but would be a great reason to avoid them if you can. Otherwise, change the oil and they last forever, minimal maintenance.
I think the sweet spot would be a 97 w/ the REAL LSD (early LSDs were piece of crap hydraulic units, later M1s had Torsen diffs) and whatever options you like.
One thing -- you can get the manual steering (mine has it), and true hardcore track types prefer it. I got my car when i was fresh out of college and I DIDN'T NEED NO FOOFY POWER STEERING. However, the PS has a considerably faster turning ratio, and lots of folks seem to prefer it. Wish I had got it.
Someone mentioned clubs -- the National Club was a disaster (read on Miata.net), but I think the local clubs are pretty strong if you're into that kind of thing.
