Both Ford and Honda now recommend 5W-20 for most of their new cars.
It is most likely associated with the CAFE requirements--thinner oil causes less internal friction, therefore provides better fuel economy.
Both companies ran tests which showed acceptable wear levels using the less viscous oil.
Here's an area where I certainly would use a full synthetic Group IV based rather than a semi-synthetic.
